MMP/Instant Grat: Automatization for Amazon

May 29, 2017 - Leverkusen - Preorder incentives are growing in importance for campaigns. After teaching our system to process 'incomplete' asset packages for releases as well, it became possible to automate 'ig powa' deliveries to iTunes. Now it was Amazon?s turn ? same procedure, same effect: Instant Grat tracks are already available in the shop despite the fact that the remaining tracks are still being cut.

MMP/Product administration: Validity check for EAN numeric codes

May 29, 2017 - Leverkusen - We have set up stricter 'access controls' for EANs during the MMP product entry process. This means that when the sales department assigns EANs, the MMP automatically checks whether the numeric code is admissible for music products or if it may have already been reserved for another use.

Depending upon the results, the system sends out a warning, e.g. this EAN is one of a series of numeric codes that has been reserved for future use, or an error notice should the EAN belong to a different product segment. This replaces the procedure that was previously followed in cases of conflict, i.e. deleting and then re-entering the data under a 'valid' EAN.

A further tool for improving data quality in the MMP and supporting sales staff in processing product data.

EMS/Backend: New tool for metadata synchronization

May 29, 2017 - Leverkusen - Besides the many additions to the front end of the MMP, we are always busy tinkering at its back end as well. We regularly put our processes to the test as we strive to meet our aim of offering the best possible quality management.

The latest outcome of this internal check-up bears the name 'diffalyzer'. Just as its name implies, the diffalyzer is a comparative tool that constantly validates and checks up-to-the-minute metadata to ensure immediate detection of unwanted changes. If the diffalyzer finds something, the system notifies the EMS Operations and Technology team and relays the relevant information. We can then immediately and specifically check whether the discrepancies were deliberate, e.g. changes that were made at the shop interface.

The latest product out of our laboratory for increasing data quality is already in the beta test phase and running successfully.

MMP/Shops I: Delivery of audio files with added value to Amazon and iTunes

May 29, 2017 - Leverkusen - There is a growing demand among customers who buy digital products for further supplementary content besides the audio files and covers. This is why booklets can now be transmitted not only to iTunes via the MMP, but also to Amazon. Further shop interfaces are currently being prepared.

Since it is not possible to subsequently transfer a booklet to iTunes, we now offer the option of blocking the delivery of respectively designated products to iTunes until the booklet has been completed.

The focus at iTunes is currently on the topic, or rather the added value of lyrics. For this reason, we would like to remind everyone that the MMP has long included the field 'Track Lyrics', making it easy to deliver these contents.

MMP/Shops II: Newly connected and in the DDEX

EXTERNAL: de_zwei_drei acquires new customer

May 29, 2017 - Leverkusen - In their search for a service provider who would restructure their web presentation, including the web design, the event organizers of lit.COLOGNE, one of the largest literature festivals in Europe, lit.RUHR, a festival that will be taking place for the first time this year, as well as of the international philosophy festival phil.cologne finally settled on our affiliated company de_zwei_drei and its range of services.

The job involves the development of a new system for the websites of all three festivals, providing accessibility and a flexible design, and optimally transporting various contents before, during and after the festivals.

We congratulate de_zwei_drei for acquiring this new customer and for their successful fulfillment of the contract.

EXTERNAL: New personnel at de_zwei_drei

May 29, 2017 - Leverkusen - Beginning on March 1, 2017, Barbara Jeszenszky has been adding her expertise to the de_zwei_drei team. We would like to use this opportunity to give her a sincere 'Welcome to the team!'.

After completing her training, Barbara carried out a range of different functions, but always in the music industry. Most recently she was IT project manager at Indigo in Hamburg.

Barbara has been hired by de_zwei_drei as a system analyst. Her job is to support the team during the evaluation of ideas, the planning of projects as well as the final quality control. Thanks to the experience she has gained over the course of her career, she is very well acquainted with the various facets of the music business and the needs of the individual players. Truly a stroke of luck for de_zwei_drei.

We are looking forward to a good and constructive cooperation.

IN-HOUSE: New optical fiber provider

May 29, 2017 - Leverkusen - Since January 2017, all data has been travelling through the newly laid optical fiber network of Netcologne. The partner in Cologne offers even better performance, which made the decision to switch an easy one. In order to eliminate even the slightest possibility of an interruption in supply, we worked with two optical fiber networks for two months.

EXTERNAL: Congratulations to the Zebralution founders

May 29, 2017 - Leverkusen - As of the beginning of April, Zebralution is 'indie' once more. Together with City Slang Managing Director Christof Ellinghaus and Embassy of Sound and Media Managing Director Konrad von Löhneysen , Zebralution founders Sascha Lazimbat and Kurt Thielen have bought the digital sales and distribution from Warner Music Central Europe. The four experienced music managers of the competence team want to strengthen their position as a digital sales and distribution company for independent labels.

We wish the new management board every success and look forward to continuing this good and well-established cooperation as well as taking on new challenges.

EMS/Away games: Come see us at the following trade fairs and conventions!

May 29, 2017 - Leverkusen - First, we are off to France. From June 6 to 9, 2017, we will be exhibiting at the Midem in Cannes. As usual, we can be found at the joint booth of the Association of Independent Music Companies (VUT). This year, our Operations Manager Lukas Hüttis will be assisting our two bosses Marc Radermacher and Irmin Wiechmann as they present the latest EMS features and hold acquisition meetings with national and international music industry representatives. Appointments can of course be requested in advance:

In July, we will then head to Berlin for the TOA - Tech Open Air. During the three days of the event from July 12 to 14, Marc Radermacher and Irmin Wiechmann will immerse themselves in everything that the (overlapping) digital topics of technology, music, art and science have to offer and compare notes with international greats. We will be excited to see the ideas that they bring back with them.

Dates I: Our year-end availability

Nov. 28, 2016 - Leverkusen - As in the past few years, the EMS Operations Team will be fully staffed up to and including December 23, 2016.

Our developers will be using the quiet time between Christmas and New Year's to carry out maintenance work and to update the system. This means that the operations department will not be staffed during this time.

The MMP will of course be available without interruption during and between the holidays. Should any issues arise, colleagues will be on site to deal with the problem immediately.

MMP/IG automation

Nov. 28, 2016 - Leverkusen - Effective immediately, IG POWA products that are only available as IG tracks can be imported via MMP and loaded into the iTunes store.

The same is also true for both 16 bit and MfiT products.

MMP/Shops I: Reconciling inventory

Nov. 28, 2016 - Leverkusen - The function "Upload shop inventory list" makes it possible to reconcile inventory between the MMP and the shops. This means that sales personnel can now independently check at any time whether all products are in fact live in the shop or if takedowns have occurred.

To achieve this, an EAN list of all active items in a shop is simply loaded into the MMP. Various lists of differences are then compiled and mailed to the address provided.

An important service for quality assurance in sales and distribution.

MMP/Shops II: Artist ID administration

Nov. 28, 2016 - Leverkusen - Correctly assigning releases to the respective artist profiles in the shops is certainly one of the great challenges when consolidating data.

The goal is to develop an Artist ID administration system that ensures that artists are not incorrectly matched across shops and that new profiles are not created by mistake.

The first stage of development has already been implemented and is ready to use. We are now working on the next steps.
Stay tuned.

MMP/Shops III: Quick look into the shops

Nov. 28, 2016 - Leverkusen - Just as important as the availability of a release in the individual territories is the information whether it was "reviewed" or "polished" by the iTunes editorial team. Up until now, this could not even be determined using Connect. It is, however, a decisive factor, for example when deciding whether a track title can be updated without a ticket.

The MMP now provides direct access to this information.

MMP/Shops: Newly connected and in the DDEX

Nov. 28, 2016 - Leverkusen - During the last half year, we have connected the following shops to the EMS:

In-house/Staff: We back education

Nov. 28, 2016 - Leverkusen - On September 1, help for our teams arrived in the form of a new student employee and two new trainees. At this time, we would like to again - and now officially - extend a warm welcome to them.

Over the next few years, Christian Kisseler will be familiarizing himself with development issues at EMS on four days a week while working towards his degree at FOM University. He will also gradually take over projects of his own. He first completed training as a wholesale and international trade agent. As a working musician, he is quite familiar with the particular sensibilities and needs of our sector.

The second new member of EMS' team of developers is Sebastian Dehn. He is studying to become an IT specialist for system integration, and we are very pleased that he will be completing the required 6-month internship at our company. We wish him a great deal of success in his project work as well as for the final examination.

Ahmad Mukdad, who is doing a 3-month internship at our affiliated company de_zwei_drei, has a very special résumé. Before political events forced him to leave Syria three years ago, he was studying computer science at the renowned HIAST Institute of Technology in Damascus. Now he would like to continue to work towards his chosen occupation in Germany and we are proud to be able to support him along the way. Once Ahmad receives his German C1 certificate in December, he wants to study computer science at RWTH Aachen University.

Colleagues are helping him implement his chosen project, "Audio Fingerprints", which involves an examination of the different representations of sound in physics and mathematics.

Dates II: End-of-year planning at iTunes & Google Play Music

Nov. 28, 2016 - Leverkusen - iTunes Connect and Google Play Music have announced their availability and delivery deadlines for releases up to the beginning of January. Please remember to give us enough advance notice about larger catalogues that are set to go online by the start of the new year.

EMS/Customers: Contract signed with Word and Sound

May 11, 2016 - Leverkusen - WAS - Word and Sound Medien GmbH and EMS are pleased to announce their cooperation. The complete digital catalog of the Hamburg-based company will now be delivered via the tried-and-tested EMS system.

Marc Radermacher, Managing Director of EMS GmbH, is very pleased to welcome this new customer, saying, “We are proud that EMS’s service portfolio and the support services our team offers have convinced a company with so much market experience of our expertise. Our business relationship is based on mutual trust and the conviction that we will continue to play an important role on the market, even as an indie.”

MMP/Message system: Prototype is live

May 11, 2016 - Leverkusen - The MMP message system gives the MMP more utility value for day-to-day business activities. The prototype is already ensuring transparency within the parties that work for and with the products.

All messages pertaining to products or tracks, such as “cover missing” or “release brought forward”, can now be entered directly into the MMP for a particular product or track and then sent to the respective recipient(s) from there. Both individual users as well as groups, e.g. “marketing department”, can be set up as recipients.

This makes any further communication channels superfluous because all information and work steps are recorded and further processed on one platform that is accessible to all involved.

At the next development level, the system will be able to automatically generate, deliver and, if applicable, confirm execution of such messages as “Import Ready”, “Import Review”, “Delivery Error”, etc., by module. At the moment, we are discussing many promising new ideas with our customers for further useful applications for this new functionality.

MMP/Profile control: Architecture has been set

May 11, 2016 - Leverkusen - We have also taken a gigantic step forward in this.

During development of the project initiated under the name “Controlling Rights at Track Level”, it quickly became obvious that we needed to start by examining usage and remuneration models that are geared towards DDEX Commission guidelines. It will continue to be possible to expand profiles per customer as desired.

eveloped out of day-to-day business practice, the available rights can be assigned per product as well as per track. The first controlling rights package in the MMP covers the following scenarios pertaining to paid downloads and streamings:

Download paid

  • Generic Download Service: purchased download
  • Untethered Download Service: download in a paid subscription system

Streaming

  • Streaming Paid (paid subscription): Interactive Subscription Streaming Service
  • Streaming Ad-Supported (free subscription with ads): Interactive Ad-Supported Streaming Service
  • Webradio (distribution of royalties through collecting societies): Non-Interactive Subscription Streaming Service.

The loaded profiles are displayed in the front end in the product view, the track list and the track view.

In-house/Staff: Congratulations

May 11, 2016 - Leverkusen - With great pride, we would like to once again – and now officially – extend our congratulations to our colleague and staff member Lukas Hüttis for having successfully completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Informatics.

Lukas Hüttis began working for EMS on April 1, 2012, while at the same time working towards his degree in Business Informatics in Cologne. During the last four years, he worked his way through all the departments at EMS. In keeping with his educational focus “Management” and his bachelor’s thesis “Analyse und Weiterentwicklung eines gewachsenen Geschäftsprozesses in einem IT-Unternehmen” (“Analysis and Further Development of an Evolved Business Process at an IT Company”), he quickly found his place in Operations. He has been working there full-time since March, and helps his team colleagues take care of the daily customer and shop requests and is responsible for coordinating in-house projects with our development department.

We are looking forward to the continuation of this constructive and very good collaboration.

In-house/Service provider: We go green

May 11, 2016 - Leverkusen - We did it: Since March 1, 2016, EMS and de_zwei_drei are being supplied with 100% eco power generated by renewable energy sources from independent operators of small and medium-sized hydroelectric and wind power stations in Germany. From now on, all of our servers, storage systems, air conditioning systems, work stations, etc., will be powered climate neutrally.

We have also taken the first step and switched our gas consumption over to include biogas. We hope that we will soon be able to implement further measures to move us away from fossil fuels.

Our new energy partner is Naturstrom from Düsseldorf, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them again for the knowledgeable and honest consultation as well as for the unproblematic implementation. Their company policy of investing one net cent in the further development of renewable energies for each kilowatt hour used is completely in line with our commitment to sustainability.

Away game/In review: SXSW Interactive & Music

May 11, 2016 - Leverkusen - This year’s SXSW once again had many new and inspiring things to discover.

SXSW Interactive and its top-class panels continue to take the lead in developing ideas for the trends of tomorrow. As part of the delegation from Germany, we and de_zwei_drei were among the exhibitors at Germany’s joint booth at SXSW Music.

We came back with a lot of new ideas for the further development of EMS that grew out of the many conspiratorial talks and meetings we had with important international shop partners such as iTunes.

Away game/Preview: Midem, June 3 – 6, 2016

May 11, 2016 - Leverkusen - Just as in the previous years, we will again be among the exhibitors at the Association of Independent Music Companies’ (VUT) joint booth at Midem. Marc Radermacher and Irmin Wiechmann will be presenting EMS’s range of services at the booth, meeting prospective international customers and using the opportunity to discuss new ideas and future projects with their customers outside of daily office life.

Appointments available upon request.

MMP/Daily Sales: SalesViewer opens additional shops

November 24, 2015 - Leverkusen - Beatport and Google are now also integrated into the MMP SalesViewer. With just a single click, sellers and distributors can check the successes of their releases in the ten most important players. Since the market changes daily, this is an important tool for planning current and future marketing activities and for their evaluation.

MMP: Curated Shops

November 24, 2015 - Leverkusen - With the new cherry picker shop control feature, distributors now only have to process the labels and products that are explicitly cleared for the curated shops. The automated block is used uniformly for existing data and new systems.
Guaranteed by this default setting is that only the products and labels that have been specifically approved will be delivered to the curated shops.

In this way, an additional security level is implemented for data control.

EMS/Shops: Newly connected and linked to DDEX

November 24, 2015 - Leverkusen - In 2015 the following shops have been integrated into the MMP to deliver audios, videos and eBooks. In addition to new destinations for talking books, there were additional changes in DDEX.

EMS: Offsite data storage

November 24, 2015 - Leverkusen - In the latter part of the summer, EMS and Phononet signed a contract on the use of the Phononet data center for offsite backups. Thanks to this arrangement, we can offer our customers supplementary storage of their media files at the remote location in Hamburg. Secure transmission of the data is ensured through the existing VPN link between EMS and Phononet. Those who are interested are invited to get in touch with Marc Radermacher.

In-house: New member of the team at de_zwei_drei

November 24, 2015 - Leverkusen - Following a three-month practicum at de_zwei_drei GmbH, Jan Küchler is now enhancing the development team in Leverkusen, starting on July 1, 2015. This native of Düsseldorf, now 27 years of age, studied mathematics and specialized in information technology at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. There he earned his Master of Science in Mathematics in the summer of 2014.

Jan is a major boost for us and for the team at de_zwei_drei. He is an avid music fan and is enthusiastic about the analysis and visualization of data - making him the perfect fit for the team.

Full steam ahead! Collaboration with Phononet and de_zwei_drei continues

Rhein/Elbe/Verbindung de_zwei_drei, EMS und PHONONETSeptember 23, 2015 - Leverkusen - For more than ten years now, EMS and de_zwei_drei, together with the Hamburg-based Phononet GmbH, have offered solutions to ease the marketing, steering and evaluation of digital media products. “What was launched with projects like the musicline.de search engine for music was continued with projects, still in existence, such as MPN or Digital Sales Service (DSS). The cooperation between our companies has been distinguished by an extraordinarily creative atmosphere, one in which new ideas are developed and services established,” according to Dietmar Schlumbohm, general manager at Phononet. “And that decade of successful cooperation is continuing now at full power, forging into the future.”

In addition to the many software projects carried out by the teams on the Rhine and Elbe, a further, independent form of cooperation has been established. Irmin Wiechmann, general manager at Encoding Management Service (EMS) and technical manager of de_zwei_drei, a development company, notes: “EMS uses, for instance, the highly professional data center operated by Phononet for offsite backups. To achieve this, the EMS storage systems were installed there and we now use the existing, secure VPN link to store the valuable data for our customers. Thus an agreement for collaboration in coming years has been made.”

At the Reeperbahn Festival, the three partners will be demonstrating to the public the expansion of their Rhine-Elbe connection, celebrating this with Kölsch and Astra – traditional brands of beer in the two regions. The partners are extending an invitation to join them in the “Hasenschaukel” at 3:30 p.m. on September 25.

MMP/eBook: BIC integration completed

December 9, 2014 – Leverkusen - Along with the WGS and BISAC genres already stored and available for use in MMP, the BIC genre structure has now also been incorporated into the system. The latter is required for eBook deliveries to the UK and to other English-speaking areas, with the exception of North America.

The BIC genres are generally combinations of capital letters. Additional information is available at: http://www.bic.org.uk.

With the integration of the BIC genres, MMP is now offering quick and easy delivery to additional international destinations. This is a very pertinent factor for our customers as they internationalize their sales activities.

MMP/Video: ASIS imports are now possible

December 9, 2014 – Leverkusen - Analog to the audio ASIS administration in MMP, videos are also being accepted as ASIS imports.

In addition to conventional high-definition videos, it is now possible to deliver and administer other formats, such as H.264, via MMP. The delivery of additional formats offers sales departments the option not only of planning marketing campaigns for a publication, but also of organizing campaigns independently using the material available to them.

MMP: Completion of the exception browser now in the home stretch

December 9, 2014 – Leverkusen - The metadata exceptions in MMP used for iTunes are active. They make possible individual control of prices, publication dates and pre-order campaigns for specific products in certain regions. Significant occasions and holidays can be made use of in this way, both simply and at short notice, for sales-promotion measures and campaigns.

The connection of additional shops has been planned, in the same way as a direct import interface from merchandise management and the addition of the “allow subscription” function in streaming portals. These individual control options will elevate MMP to the next level as a dependable control center for successful sales of audio, video and eBook products.

EMS/Shops: New links

December 9, 2014 – Leverkusen - Since August of 2014 the following shops have been integrated into MMP – for the sale of audios, videos and eBooks. With these additions, the number of platforms and destinations in MMP has reached 115.

EMS: New technical infrastructure

December 9, 2014 – Leverkusen - Our server infrastructure has been upgraded once again. In order to ensure even more redundancy and greater protection against failures, we have transferred the MMP hardware to a virtualized environment. In this way operations are no longer tied to the functioning of a particular physical computer. As soon as any computer in the network fails, we can quickly transfer operations to stand-by computers running in parallel. This is an additional step in our efforts to continuously optimize and safeguard our infrastructure and services.

MMP/Audio: Additional automatic features for iTunes pre-ordering

September 4, 2014 - Leverkusen - In addition to 'POWA – Pre-Order Without Assets', further pre-order activities can now be effected, fully automatically, using MMP:

  • Instant Grat(ification): Upon placing the pre-order, the customer will automatically obtain advance tracks from the release selected.
  • Instant Grat Countdown: In the period between pre-order and the release date, the purchaser will receive, in a specific timed sequence, access to the individual tracks as they are successively released.
  • Album Pre-Order Price Group: The product is offered during the pre-order period at a lower price than at the release date.

Following successful completion of test runs, these functions will be integrated into the basic MMP configuration.
The creation of additional iTunes pre-order features will, as usual, be carried out by our support team. If there are questions or if you are interested in using the pre-order features, please contact ops@media-ems.com.

MMP: Graphic Sales Viewer

September 4, 2014 - Leverkusen - The graphic depiction of the Sales Viewer is now online. After selecting a time period of 30, 60 or 90 days, the daily sales figures – filtered by shops, countries or labels – can be shown as curves and may be compared one with another.

MMP Sales Viewer Grafik

The 'Top 10' charts for the download bundles, download tracks and streaming tracks allow for direct assessment of the effectiveness of marketing campaigns. A click on 'list view' will show the data for the period previously selected – 30, 60 or 90 days. This will thus make the Sales Viewer an important instrument for depicting and planning sales-promotion campaigns.

MMP: Cover sizes

September 4, 2014 - Leverkusen - For the entire media spectrum – audio, video and e-books – cover images in widths of up to 2,500 pixels can be delivered by MMP via EMS. The much-improved display capabilities in the new generation of terminal units are exploited perfectly with these high-definition covers. And the rumor is that cover files in this size are soon to become mandatory.
